Devonport Chamber Orchestra
The orchestra’s first concert of the year is this Sunday, with Mark Bennett conducting and Henrietta Reid (pictured above) as the soprano soloist. On the programme are Canteloube: Songs from the Auvergne (a selection); four arias from Mozart operas; and Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony. Tickets are $20 at the door, no eftpos available.

Unsung Heros Live at Harmony Hall
Prepare for a night of songs, stories and images from New Zealand’s distant past at the Unsung Heroes concert this Sunday. The concert offers stories from New Zealand history in song, with newspaper clippings and poems read by Peter Elliott as an introduction and a slideshow of historic images to accompany each song. Tickets are $20 at the door.

1001 Nights Dance Show
This colourful gala show at the Rose Centre journeys through a variety of dance styles from around the world. It promises dazzling costumes along with amazing music and dancing. Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for pensioners and children under 12 and can be purchased here (fees apply) or booked by phone or email (021-077-4720 or tais@tais-bellydance.co.nz) and paid by bank transfer.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay, with its extensive collection of photos, artefacts, medals and more, for a look into New Zealand’s maritime history. Young visitors can try their hand at making a medal as part of the school holiday activities on offer.

Devonport Museum
The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historIcal photographs.

Nunuku’s Light
An exhibition of works by Miriam Cameron, inspired by the story of pacifist Moriori chief Nunuku-whenua and Cameron’s trip to the Chatham Islands, features expressionist paintings that reflect the chief’s ideas, values and way of life.

Commemorating Tūhoe Prophet Rua Kenana: A Man for Our Times
This exhibition honours leader, faith healer and land rights activist Rua Kenana (1869–1937). It features a 20-metre-long 10-panel mural by Tony Johnston based on Kenana’s life. The work was completed in 1981 and hung in the Manukau City Council Chambers, but was put into storage when the council was among those merged into Auckland Council. Recently located, it is being exhibited with related works by other artists. Artist Talk by Tony Johnstone on Saturday at 12.30pm.

The Depot Artspace
New Principles is a collection of contemporary furniture from emerging and established artists based in Auckland. The exhibition includes the work of six artists who present furniture not as accessories to a room, but as a highlight.
