Vauxhall pupils hit the street for car-free day
The success of a recent car-free day at Vauxhall School means the event will be repeated next year.
Designed to encourage children to bike, scooter, run or walk to school, the sustainable-transport event also brought the community together with on-site fun activities.
The school’s environmental co-ordina- tor, Martin Laurence, helped Year 5 chil- dren organise the day with support from Auckland Transport.
“It was a very successful day that helped build awareness of finding more enviro-friendly ways to come to school, said teacher Mary Laurence. A bike-and-scooter track and a bike-check station were set up, with coffee for parents and a voucher for children to collect an iceblock at lunchtime.
Morrison Ave was coned off to school traffic in the morning. Parents and care-givers who did need to drive children to class, parked on Vauxhall or Wairoa Rds so they could walk the final stretch.
