A Bumper Weekend of Special Screenings at The Vic

Cinema Italiano, the Italian Film Festival, has kicked off, bringing the best of Italian cinema to Devonport. Screenings continue through to 21 May.

Happy Hours and Live Music at The Patriot

Two happy hours Friday (4–7pm and 9–11pm), with musician Diego playing from 6pm.

Then on Saturday from 8.30pm, young, raw and loud bands Wicked Sickness and Mistress will invade the Patriot!

Sport

North Shore Rugby Club

Last Saturday, playing away from home, the premiers continued their undefeated start to the season with a 65-0 drubbing  of Helensville.

This weekend, the men’s premier and reserve teams both take on Silverdale at home. Also playing at Vauxhall Rd are the premier women (versus Marist) and the under-21 side (facing Massey). The under-85kg side plays Northcote away from home.

Friendly Fridays at Stanley Bay Petanque Club

An opportunity for club members and guests to play petanque and enjoy a social catch-up with friends and the local community. All welcome.

When: Friday, play 3–5pm, bar opens from 5.00pm.

Cristina Beth: Cameos — a women’s line at Satellite2

Retro mattress fabric takes on new life in local artist Cristina Beth’s works about women’s identity. The mattresses — collected from kerbside inorganic collections — are overlaid with painted lines and thread for the seven larger oval pieces in the collection, which are complemented by 18 smaller squares.

Gary Hunt: The Sound of Steel at Depot Artspace

An exhibition of sculptured percussion instruments created by designer, musician and steel fabricator Gary Hunt. The instruments, which can all be played, are made from a mix of found objects, crafted percussive shapes and miscellaneous mechanisms.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with band Helium Project, led by Devonport local Nick Edgar. A live-music show to accompany the exhibition takes place on 23 May.

Tim Li: Portraits from the Deep exhibition at DEPOT 3 Vic Road

Portraits from the Deep showcases a collection of illustrations and gyotaku prints by Tim Li, an artist who produces hyper-realistic depictions of Aotearoa’s marine species. Gyotaku originated as a way for Japanese fishermen to record their catches and is now recognised as a traditional art form.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm.

Volcanic Vinyl Pop-Up Record Store

New and used LPs for sale across most genres including funk, soul, punk, blues, rock, electronica, metal, reggae and hip hop, all in the convivial surroundings of Tiny Triumphs.
