General Events

Welcome the Godwits  

Restoring Takarunga Hauraki invites you to welcome the bar-tailed godwits (kuaka) to the peninsula. The birds complete a 12,000 km non-stop journey from Alaska to New Zealand each year. Flying at an average speed of 55 km/h, they cover this distance in just eight to nine days. Feel free to bring a plate for the picnic and take part in activities and games.

When: Sunday, 11.30am-2.30pm. 

Where: Sandy Bay Reserve, Sandy Bay Road, Bayswater. 

 

Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 

Remember and honour the armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. Service starts at 10.45am at the memorial of the untidy soldier on Victoria Rd.

St Leo’s Christmas Fair 

Food, clothes, home baking, games, raffles, toys, books, plants and more are all on offer at the St Leo’s Catholic School fair this Sunday.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum 

Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay to see Over Seas – Mā te Moana, an exhibition of objects brought home by Royal New Zealand Navy sailors during overseas deployments all around the world. 

When: Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm.

Devonport Museum

The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historical photographs.

Sport 

North Shore Cricket Club 

After bowling out Cornwall for 172 and finishing the first day on 65 for four, Shore find themselves under pressure going into day two at Devonport Domain. Will they rise to the occasion?

Friday Night Open Mic

Come to Harmony Hall tonight to hear talented local singers and maybe give it a go yourself. Bring a plate and BYO.

Five-piece covers band SweetSpot play songs from the Likes of Guns & Roses, Nirvana, Pink Floyd and Robbie Williams on Saturday night.

KinoFest 2024 German Film Festival: Final Weekend

In collaboration with the Goethe Institute the Vic presents  a programme highlighting contemporary and classic German films. The theme – Global Ties, Personal Journeys – highlights the evolving landscape of German society and cinema’s role in bridging cultural gaps. Closing night Sunday 10 November 5.30pm with Shahid. Kurosawa Season: Seven Samurai (1954) 

A chance to see Seven Samurai, restored with a stunning new 4K transfer to commemorate the film’s 70th anniversary. Experience Akira Kurosawa’s enduring masterpiece on the big screen like never before. In Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets here.

Gallery Exhibitions   

Also My Hometown: At a new location for the Depot Artspace 

Also My Hometown: A 30-year retrospective of artwork is a comprehensive exhibition of the landscape paintings and ceramic works of artist Onlie Ong, who has had a long and varied career. The exhibition is on the ground floor of the former Devonport Borough Council building on Victoria Rd. The Depot is using the building’s upper floor as a creative hub for 16 local artists.

Takapuna Grammar School Special Education Unit at Satellite2 Gallery 

An exhibition of artwork produced by the Takapuna Grammar School Special Education Unit is showing at the gallery for a week only. Many of the works in the non-sale exhibition feature references to well known New Zealand and international artists.
