Celebrating the Women in our Lives

Mother’s Day Planting 2026

Planting season is kicking off at a community planting day at Northboro Reserve in Hauraki. Celebrate our mums at this annual family-friendly event. Connect with neighbours and our local environment. Bring a plate to share for lunch. Bread and soup provided. Register here.

When: Sunday, 11am–1pm.

Where: Meet at the Northboro Reserve pumphouse (near the playground). The easiest entry is through the Northboro Rd walkway.

 

Ladies Day at North Shore Rugby Club

Celebrate the women of the club and support the continued growth of the women’s game. VIP marquee experience, drink on arrival, canapés. Plus auctions, raffles and best-dressed prizes (men and women). A fantastic afternoon of rugby club hospitality and entertainment, and plenty of reasons to stick around long into the evening. $20 per person. Tickets here.

Caterpillar: Mother’s Day Advance Screening 

In an early-2000s Wellington household, three generations of women navigate love, ambition and change. This female-led family drama is a funny, emotional film about the things that shape us forever, and the love that must prevail.

Papercut: Satellite2

Artist Max Newton sources discarded books from charity shops and local recycling centres, rescuing them from landfill and giving them new life as collages. He carefully cuts out the images that appeal to him, then reassembles them into colourful compositions. Each piece becomes a new story, emerging from one that already existed. Material World: Depot 3 Vic Road

Artist Chris Melville is a visual trickster. His body of photographic works – some of which echo Devonport and the convergence of sea and sky – has been created by capturing images of layers of everyday fabrics. What appear at first glance to be mountains, tidal currents or mist drifting across water are, in fact, studies of material in motion. Read the story in the 24 April Flagstaff.

Meet in May: The Rose Centre Art Spot

Each month, the Rose Centre Art Spot highlights the work of a different local artist. For May, the Belmont Art Group presents a watercolour exhibition. This group of art enthusiasts was formed in August last year. Read the story in the 8 May Flagstaff.

An Introduction to Painting and Colour 

These weekly art classes are about exploring the joy and potential of paint with a specific focus on the importance of colour. Artist Katie Thornton will set new challenges over six weeks, including working from still lifes through to creating abstract mark-making. More information here.

Common Matter: Depot Artspace

Final weekend: Artist Amanda Mackenzie presents a study of the humble egg tray — made for function from waste, endlessly recycled, the epitome of sustainability. Community contributions (of around 3500 egg trays) form the foundation of structures that are stacked, clustered and reconfigured. Read the story in the 10 April Flagstaff.

Integration: Depot Lounge

Louise Mair’s exhibition, Integration, explores themes of belonging, transition and acceptance.  Each painting is built through a process of layering. Scraping back the paint reveals earlier marks or spaces in time.

Devonport Navy Museum 

Visit the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum for a look into New Zealand’s naval history. View albums from the museum’s extensive photographic collections from World War I onwards, as part of the What a Life exhibition on display in the Foyer Gallery.

Devonport Museum

Sport & Recreation

North Shore Rugby Club

Local rivalry makes for a big Saturday at Vauxhall! The premiers and premier reserves both host Northcote, with the under-85kg team also at home, to Glenfield. The under-21s are the only senior Shore side on the road, travelling to Massey. It’s also Ladies Day at the club (see above).

When: Saturday at 1pm (premier reserves) and 2.45pm (premiers and under-85kg).

North Shore United Football Club

North Shore’s two (seniors and under-23s) local-derby matches versus Takapuna are postponed this weekend. Last weekend, Shore had a 3-1 away loss to Taupo, taking them down to fifth-equal on the table.
