Devonport This Weekend – 7, 8, 9 June

General Events   

Matariki Hikoi and Hangi

Celebrate the Māori new year with a walk up Takarunga on Sunday. From 2pm to 4pm, lanterns and whetū (stars) will be made and kapa haka performances by local schools enjoyed at the Devonport Community House.  The hikoi up the maunga begins at 4.10pm, returning to the house at 5.30pm for a hangi dinner with live music from local performers. Tickets are free, but numbers are limited, so register by email to matariki@devonportcommunityhouse.co.nz.

Make Your Mark Workshop

Join the artists behind the Concre[ā]te exhibition at the Depot, Tui Kayoko Hirabayashi and Marie Hemo Titi Mapa, to learn some quick and easy techniques for creating urban art. Try your hand at tagging and other methods in collaborating on a large-scale community billboard reflecting and celebrating the cultural fabric of Tāmaki Makaurau. Workshop is free to attend, koha accepted on entry. Register here

Devonport School of Dance Showcase 

Devonport School of Dance presents its Mid-Year Showcase at The Rose Centre this Sunday. Students will show what they’ve been learning so far this year over six mini shows throughout the day. For tickets, please visit here.

Love Food Hate Waste workshop 

Come along to an Auckland Council supported workshop for tips and tricks on what to do with leftover citrus and advice about how to store your fresh food and leftovers. Free. Register here.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum 

Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay, with its extensive collection of photos, artefacts, medals and more, for a look into New Zealand’s maritime history.

Devonport Museum

The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historIcal photographs.

Football: North Shore United 

North Shore hosts Hibiscus Coast AFC in a league fixture this Saturday.

The Depot Artspace

Concre[ā]te is an exhibition that showcases large-scale mixed-media artwork crafted by artist duo 2PARU – Tui Kayoko Hirabayashi and Marie Hemo Titi Mapa. Both artists draw inspiration from the ever-evolving cityscape of Tāmaki Makaurau. They fuse painting, installation, and sculpture into an exploration of urban narratives.

The photo, the object, the story 

Ten time World of Wearable Art finalist Beatrice Carlson brings her newest exhibition to Satellite2 Gallery. The photo, the object, the story uses 11 photographs, 11 pieces of jewellery and eight objects to illustrate Carlson’s creative process, capturing aspects of New Zealand history at the same time.
