Devonport This Weekend — 6, 7, 8 June

Matariki Devonport

Community Potluck Hakari (Feast)

The fun starts at 3pm, with the Harakeke weaving team, Noughty Wasters, Bike Auckland and Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade in attendance, as well as an open plant nursery. Dinner will be served from 5pm, with soup, salad and vege hangi for all. Bring a plate to share if you can. Koha welcome. Register here.

Matariki Takarunga Lantern Hikoi

Assemble at Whare Toi, with lanterns, for a hikoi (walk) up Takarunga. Devonport Primary School Kapa Haka group will perform at the summit.

Matariki Tamariki at Devonport Community House

An afternoon to celebrate Matarki with the kids, featuring lantern-crafting, face-painting, pūrākau (stories) and whētu (star) cookies and crafts.

When: Saturday, 2–4pm.

Baywater School’s Matariki Designs at the Rose Centre 

Each year, Bayswater School students compete to have their design printed on the school’s Matariki Festival merchandise. Six-year-old Valentino Tai-Lui created the winning design for 2025. The illustrations from competition winners and runners-up for 2021–2025 have been reproduced and are showcased in the Rose Centre’s Art Spot for June. Pop in and see the students’ talent for yourself!

Star-making at the Navy Museum

Drop in and make your own Matariki whetū (star). Runs until Friday 27 June.

Gallery Exhibitions

Suture Collective: Liminal exhibition opening and artist talk at DEPOT 3 Vic Road

Artists Holly Clarke, Vanessa Narbey and Bridget Pahl bring a female perspective in their exhibition Liminal, reflecting on how visual space, nature and the tactility of paint come together to convey meaning. Their works highlight the interconnectedness of nature and self. See here for more information.

Above/Below at Satellite2

Asher Milgate’s unique photographic works explore memory, history and identity. Above/Below, which is part of the 2025 Auckland Festival of Photography, encapsulates not what is immediately visible, but what is felt, inherited and often unseen, and reflects his explorations and experiences while living in Devonport. Connor Ward: Pulse of Place at DEPOT Lounge

Pulse of Place/Tūrangawaewae comprises six photographic works by Connor Ward, who typically captures images from afar, demanding pause and study of the environment. In contrast, there are intimate yet fleeting glances of domestic objects and man-made structures. This exhibition also is part of the 2025 Auckland Festival of Photography. Final weekend: The Sound of Steel at DEPOT Artspace

An exhibition of sculptured percussion instruments created by designer, musician and steel fabricator Gary Hunt. The instruments, which can all be played, are made from a mix of found objects, crafted percussive shapes and miscellaneous mechanisms.

When: Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm.

Sport

North Shore Rugby Club

It’s a local-derby double at Vauxhall Rd, with both the premiers and reserves taking on Takapuna. The premier women, under-85kg and under-21 sides all have away games.

North Shore United AFC

It’s back to business in the Northern Regional League for Shore, after a Chatham Cup round-two loss last weekend. On Saturday, they have an evening match, away to fifth-placed Ellerslie.

 

Friendly Fridays at Stanley Bay Petanque Club

An opportunity for club members and guests to play petanque and enjoy a social catch-up with friends and the local community. All welcome.

Potluck comedy, Italian favourites and a love story at The Vic

It’s opening night for Potluck, a live improvised-comedy soap opera, with three couples sharing a potluck dinner and no one knowing what scandals will be revealed. A revolving cast of improvisors serve up relationship morsels, and tales of love and loss. See here for more information.

The Vic: A Love Story is a short film charting the fascinating history of the Victoria Theatre, the oldest purpose-built cinema in the Southern Hemisphere. Locally produced, it features some of those who campaigned so hard to bring the theatre back to life. Select weekly screenings form part of the fundraising campaign to raise money for new seats for the cinema.
