Auckland Heritage Festival
Maungauika / North Head Tours
A walk and talk over Maungauika/North Head’s historic Victorian coastal defences, installed during the Russian war scares of the 1880s. Tour the gun positions and the tunnels. Hear the many stories and secrets that have swirled around for years, from hidden flying boats in secret, sealed tunnels to the belief that an old dump with potentially dangerous ammunition remains undiscovered. Tours take approximately two hours, covered footwear recommended for unsealed paths and steps. Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Bookings 09 445 5186 or info@navymuseum.co.nz.

The History of Devonport’s Plaques
Jacquie Morris has made rubbings of the interesting plaques dotted about, including some you may have missed. She then researched and photographed them and they are on display in the Library for the duration of the festival. Take a look, learn more about the plaques, then take a walk to find them and impress kids and visitors alike with how much you now know.

Pioneer Battalion WW1- Pasifika Soldiers in Devonport
Local historian David Veart presents an illustrated talk sharing his research on the Pasifika Pioneer Volunteers trained at Devonport during the First World War. A new display on the Pasifika soldiers buried at O’Neill’s Point Cemetery will be shown in support of David’s talks.

Scott Bainbridge Book Launch of The Heist
Scott Bainbridge is launching his latest book, The Heist. The true crime account of the incredible Birkenhead Foodtown Robbery of 1984. A brazen theft, executed in mere minutes and a fascinating investigation using the technology of the time that shone a bright light on an unseen criminal underworld and three unsolved murders. Ex-detective Scott tells this local cops and robbers story using his extensive research and interviews with several of the key players – on both sides of the law.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay to see its latest exhibition, Over Seas – Mā te Moana, a collection of objects brought home by Royal New Zealand Navy sailors during overseas deployments all around the world.

The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historical photographs.

A Mistake (M) Preview
This medical drama follows a surgeon as she faces the consequences of a split-second decision in the operating room. Filmed locally in Devonport, celebrated Kiwi filmmaker Christine Jeffs directs Elizabeth Banks in this thought-provoking film that delves into the ripple effect of a single human error. Adapted from the award-winning novel of the same name. Tickets here.
