Matariki Devonport

Te Hau Kapua (Devonport) Matariki Opening Ceremony

Celebrate the opening of the Matariki period in Devonport, with performances of music and kapa haka, at the rotunda behind the library. All welcome.

When: Sunday, 5pm.

Where: Band Rotunda, Windsor Reserve.

 

Star Hunt Competition

Pick up a Star Map from Devonport Library, Devonport Community House or selected local businesses, then explore the village to find all nine Matariki stars in shop windows. Submit a completed map and go in to win a $200 shopping voucher.

Star-making at the Navy Museum

Drop in and make your own Matariki whetū (star). Runs until Friday 27 June.

Gallery Exhibitions

Tides of Change Opening at the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

Meet photographic artist Linda Jarrett, whose exhibition, Tides of Change, opens in the museum’s atrium. Jarrett’s works, part of the 2025 Auckland Festival of Photography, investigate the ecological impact of invasive exotic seaweed on New Zealand’s native marine environment. Above/Below at Satellite2

Asher Milgate’s unique photographic works explore memory, history and identity. His exhibition Above/Below is part of the 2025 Auckland Festival of Photography. It encapsulates not what is immediately visible, but instead what is felt, inherited, and often unseen, and reflects his explorations and experiences while living in Devonport. Gary Hunt: The Sound of Steel at DEPOT Artspace

An exhibition of sculptured percussion instruments created by designer, musician and steel fabricator Gary Hunt. The instruments, which can all be played, are made from a mix of found objects, crafted percussive shapes and miscellaneous mechanisms.

When: Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm.

Tim Li: Portraits from the Deep exhibition at DEPOT 3 Vic Road

Portraits from the Deep showcases a collection of illustrations and gyotaku prints by Tim Li, an artist who produces hyper-realistic depictions of Aotearoa’s marine species. Gyotaku originated as a way for Japanese fishermen to record their catches and is now recognised as a traditional art form.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm.

Sport

North Shore United AFC

Last weekend, North Shore enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Mt Albert Ponsonby at Allen Hill, moving the side up the table to seventh place. On Saturday, Shore plays at home again, this time hosting Waiheke United in the second round of the Chatham Cup.

North Shore Rugby Club

Last weekend brought victories for both the premier men and women. The only Shore fixture this weekend sees the under-85kg side playing Takapuna, on Saturday, away from home at Onewa Domain.

 

Friendly Fridays at Stanley Bay Petanque Club

An opportunity for club members and guests to play petanque and enjoy a social catch-up with friends and the local community. All welcome.

The Vic: A Love Story

This new short film charts the fascinating history of the Victoria Theatre, the oldest purpose-built cinema in the Southern Hemisphere. Locally produced, it features some of those who campaigned so hard to bring the theatre back to life. Screenings form part of the fundraising campaign to raise money for new seats for the cinema.
