Kapa Haka lights up Matariki Festival at Bayswater School last weekend
General Events
Matariki at The Rose Centre
- Market: 10am–2pm. Celebrate Matariki with a vibrant community market full of local arts, crafts, kai, and live entertainment. Free entry.
- Mau Rākau Workshop: 10–11am. Learn about the martial art of mau rākau in this special Matariki workshop for rangatahi aged 8-16 years. To book your spot, email terehia@rth.org.nz.
- Candle-Making Workshop (sold out): 10am–12.30pm.
- Raranga Workshop: 1–2pm. A hands-on weaving workshop. No booking needed, just drop in. Koha appreciated.
- Fried-Bread-Making Workshop:1–2pm. Learn how to make this delicious favourite from scratch, then get stuck in and make your own! Koha entry. Email kiaora@rosecentre.co.nz to secure your spot.

Community Planting Day: Uru Harakeke
Join Restoring Takarunga Hauraki for this special planting of different varieties of harakeke (flax), to establish a site for local raranga weavers. Other varieties of native species will also be planted to support the existing reserve. No previous planting experience necessary. Soup and bread for lunch afterwards. All welcome. Matariki Upcycled Craft Sessions
Celebrate Matariki with creative upcycling. Craft Matariki-themed art with items otherwise destined for landfill. All ages welcome. Cost: free, but reserve a place here.

Celebrate Matariki at the Navy Museum
Make a paper whetū (star), search for hidden whetū and decorate whetū cookies. More information here.

The Devonport Star Trail
Local school students have created nine Matariki stars, which have been hidden in shop windows on Victoria Rd. Grab an entry form from the library, hunt down all the stars, and go in the draw to win a $300 voucher from a Devonport business. For ages 16 and under. Read the story in the 22 May Flagstaff. Visit the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum for a look into New Zealand’s naval history.

Devonport Museum
The museum has many fascinating displays and historical photos, showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families. See our column about an object from the museum in the 22 May Flagstaff.

Sport & Recreation
North Shore Rugby Club
Two home semi-finals this weekend. In a battle royale, the premiers face local foes Takapuna. And in a tasty curtain-raiser, the premier reserves take on East Coast Bays.
In the final round of the under-85kg competition, North Shore hosts Silverdale. The under-21s head north for their last regular-season game, an away fixture against East Coast Bays, having already secured a home semi-final on 18 July.
When: Saturday, 12.30pm (premier reserves) and 2.45pm (premiers and under-85kg).

North Shore United Football Club
No fixtures this weekend for North Shore men in the Northern Region Football League. The women’s First Team, which had a 4-0 away win last weekend, and tops the division-one table, has a 1pm home match on Sunday versus Northern Rovers. In the men’s community leagues, there’s just one home game.

Friday and Saturday Afternoon Social Pétanque
Newcomers and beginners are always welcome. Boules are available for play. A fun opportunity to play pétanque and enjoy a social catch-up with friends and the local community afterwards in the clubrooms. More information here.

Devonport Chamber Orchestra at Holy Trinity

Matariki Group Exhibition: Opening
Puanga–Matariki explores the rich kōrero shared across the Pacific about our celestial whānau and the many ways different cultures understand these stars. By looking to Puanga, Matariki, and the wider cosmos, we are reminded of our deep relationship with the natural world.

Laura Tait: Time Capsule Gallery
