Bayswater School’s Matariki Festival features student kapa haka groups
General Events
Matariki Festival: Bayswater School
Enjoy kapa haka performances, crafts for the kids, market stalls and kai, as well as the famous Bayswater bonfire. This year’s theme is ‘Matariki ki te Rangi’ – a celebration of our connection to the heavens, the stars, and the aspirations they inspire within our communities. More information here.

Matariki Upcycled Craft Sessions
Celebrate Matariki with creative upcycling. Craft Matariki-themed art with items otherwise destined for landfill. All ages welcome. Cost: free, but reserve a place here.

The Devonport Star Trail
Local school students have created nine Matariki stars, which have been hidden in shop windows on Victoria Rd. Grab an entry form from the library, hunt down all the stars, and go in the draw to win a $300 voucher from a Devonport business. For ages 16 and under. Read the story in the 22 May Flagstaff. Free Plants Giveaway – Go Native 2026
Collect some free plants from the community native-plant nursery. Spruce up your garden with plants grown by volunteers in our community. Suitable for backyards or pots.

Visit the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum for a look into New Zealand’s naval history.

Devonport Museum
The museum has many fascinating displays and historical photos, showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families. See our column about an object from the museum in the 22 May Flagstaff.

Sport & Recreation
North Shore Rugby Club
It’s quarter-finals time for the premiers and premier reserves, who both have home fixtures against Silverdale. The under-21 and under-85kg sides are in the penultimate rounds of regular competition, respectively taking on Massey (at home) and Kumeu (away).
When: Saturday, 1pm (premier reserves and under-21s) and 2.45pm (premiers).

North Shore United Football Club
In the Northern Region Football League, North Shore are away to Cambridge FC and the First Team Women play at Greenhithe. In the community leagues, home matches are scheduled for:
- Saturday – Allen Hill Stadium (men: 1pm and 3pm) and Bayswater Park (men: 1pm)
- Sunday – Allen Hill Stadium (women: 11am).
Try Out Disc Golf

South African Film and Music Night
The Vic, in collaboration with the South African Film Festival, proudly presents a night of food, music and film. The evening starts with a wine-and-cheese reception, with music by Mhara Marimba, followed by the short film Squashbox, then the feature film The Heart is a Muscle.

Figurative Artists Collective Exhibition: Depot Artspace

Community Planting Day: Uru Harakeke
Join Restoring Takarunga Hauraki for this special planting of different varieties of harakeke (flax), to establish a site for local raranga weavers. Pūanga – Matariki Group Exhibition: Opening
