Revenge Of The Box at Satellite2

A show by Devonport artist Gianni Russo, first conceived and exhibited in the early 2000s. The paintings and sculptural works recognise “a growing contempt that we humans display towards the environment” suggesting that one day, box-like objects will take revenge over our wanton over-consumption. Russo has exhibited internationally over his creative career.

Gary Hunt: The Sound of Steel at DEPOT Artspace

An exhibition of sculptured percussion instruments created by designer, musician and steel fabricator Gary Hunt. The instruments, which can all be played, are made from a mix of found objects, crafted percussive shapes and miscellaneous mechanisms.

When: Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm.

Tim Li: Portraits from the Deep at DEPOT 3 Vic Road

Portraits from the Deep showcases a collection of illustrations and gyotaku prints by Tim Li, an artist who produces hyper-realistic depictions of Aotearoa’s marine species. Gyotaku originated as a way for Japanese fishermen to record their catches and is now recognised as a traditional art form.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm.

General Events  

Creative-writing Workshop at Devonport Community House

Led by Auckland-based poet, author, and playwright Dominic Hoey, this two-day, creative-writing workshop focuses on short stories and novel writing. It will explore key storytelling techniques in a supportive and inspiring environment. More information and bookings here.

Print-making Workshop at Devonport Recycling Centre

Learn a simple lo-fi print-making technique that uses junk to make artworks. Participants will create patterns for prints, learn some colour theory, and look at how a composition works. Run by local artist and experienced art teacher Erica Soman. Suitable for ages 7–12. Koha of $5 per person. Tickets here.

Mindful Tea Ceremony at the Library

A calming tea ceremony (in English and Mandarin) hosted by the Mindful Peace Academy. Settle your mind, experience Zen tea and enjoy a peaceful hour together.

Devonport Museum marks 45 years

The Devonport Historical and Museum Society AGM will celebrate 45 years of the museum being open. It will also update the society’s constitution, acknowledge long-time members and elect a new president.

Science on Ice at the Navy Museum Family Fun Day

Free Screening and a Love Story at The Vic

The Doctor’s Wife: After retiring from a distinguished career as a cardiac surgeon in New Zealand, Dr Alan Kerr led a Kiwi team to Gaza and the West Bank to operate on children with heart disease. His two-week mission led into a 20-year commitment to the people of Palestine, with his wife Hazel Kerr alongside him. A Q&A session with the Kerrs, and filmmaker Paula Whetu Jones, follows the documentary.

The Vic: A Love Story is a new short film that charts the fascinating history of the Victoria Theatre, the oldest purpose-built cinema in the Southern Hemisphere. Locally produced, it covers the theatre’s beginnings in 1912 as a ‘picture palace’ showing silent films, to the advent of the ‘talkie’ movies and then the digital age, and features some of those who campaigned so hard to bring it back to life. Screening times are here.

North Shore Rugby Club

The Shore men’s teams all had victories last weekend, three of them over Northcote sides, with the premiers winning 41-10. This Saturday, the premiers and reserves both take on Massey away from home. At Vauxhall Rd, the premier women take on Patumahoe, kicking off at 2.45pm. The under-21 and under-85kg and teams face East Coast Bays at 1pm and 2.45pm respectively.

North Shore United AFC

North Shore enjoyed a 2-1 victory over Northern Rovers last weekend. They are back at Allen Hill again on Saturday, playing Mt Albert Ponsonby, who currently stand one place above Shore in the league table.
