Matariki Devonport

Haka and Hāngī at the Community House

The fun kicks off at 4pm, with local kura (school) students giving a kapa haka performance. All are welcome. This is followed at 6pm by a sit-down hāngī, waiata and live music — bookings essential. See here for more information.

Matariki at The Vic: Te Hau Kapua Kapa Haka

Nau mai haere mai ki The Vic Devonport to celebrate Matariki for 2025. Watch a kapa haka rōpū performance, then learn waiata and a haka with the local Te Hau Kapua Kapa Haka group. Koha entry.

When: Friday, 2–3pm.

Pūanga-Matariki Twilight Market at Lake House Arts Centre

This popular annual family event brings together art, music, culture and kai. Explore the historic house filled with artworks, enjoy kai and food stalls in the gardens, watch Māori creative practice in action at the carving studio and experience the spirit of Matariki with waiata and more. Ruaruawhetū Weaving Exhibition at DEPOT Artspace

Ruaruawhetū – Weaving Design Celebrating the Stars features the individual and collectively-produced raranga (weaving) works of 17 artists, inspired by the nine stars of Matariki. During the course of the exhibition, the artists will share their knowledge through artists’ and curator’s kōrero (talks) and a series of weaving workshops. Baywater School’s Matariki Designs at the Rose Centre

Each year, Bayswater School students compete to have their design printed on the school’s Matariki Festival merchandise. Six-year-old Valentino Tai-Lui created the winning design for 2025. The illustrations from competition winners and runners-up for 2021–2025 have been reproduced and are showcased in the Rose Centre’s Art Spot for June.

When: Friday, 9am–4pm (and weekdays throughout June).

Star-making at the Navy Museum

Drop in and make your own Matariki whetū (star). Runs until Friday 27 June.

Sport

North Shore Rugby Club

The under-21s had a strong showing in the local derby at Vauxhall Rd last weekend, taking out Takapuna 52-8. They now top the table and get to take a week off. Also enjoying wins were the premier men, and the reserves, who each had 29-15 away victories against Mahurangi.

This weekend, it’s a Matariki Friday double bill against East Coast Bays for the premier men’s sides at Vauxhall Rd, kicking off at 1pm (reserves) and 2.45pm (premiers) respectively.

On Saturday, the premier women are at home for their second round-robin match in the top-four and bottom-four shakedown. They play Papatoetoe at 2.45pm. The under-85kg men’s side are away at Massey.

North Shore United AFC

This weekend, the Shore team (currently sixth-equal on the table) travels south, to take on last-placed Ngaruawahia.

 

Friendly Fridays at Stanley Bay Petanque Club

An opportunity for club members and guests to play petanque and enjoy a social catch-up with friends and the local community. All welcome.

Framing Devonport at Satellite2: Opening and Artists’ Talk 

Framing Devonport explores Devonport’s heritage buildings, showing old homes in a new light. The works have been produced by Paola King-Borrero and Paul Chapman, whose artistic collaboration on this project came about through Covid lockdown walks in the neighbourhood.

Suture Collective: Liminal at DEPOT 3 Vic Road 

Artists Holly Clarke, Vanessa Narbey and Bridget Pahl bring a female perspective in their exhibition Liminal, reflecting on how visual space, nature and the tactility of paint come together to convey meaning. Their works highlight the interconnectedness of nature and self, be it through observance, intuition or other sensory elements. See here for more information.

The Doctor’s Wife: After retiring from a distinguished career as a cardiac surgeon in New Zealand, Dr Alan Kerr led a Kiwi team to Gaza and the West Bank to operate on children with heart disease. His two-week mission led into a 20-year commitment to the people of Palestine, with his wife Hazel Kerr alongside him. Includes Q&A with the Kerrs.
