Sheila’s Island at the Rose Centre
Four hapless middle-aged, middle-class, middle-management businesswomen become the first people to be shipwrecked on an island in the UK’s Lake District, in this black comedy at the Rose Centre. For more information on the show, see this week’s Devonport Flagstaff. Tickets available here.

Friday Night Open Mic

Devonport Chamber Orchestra
The DCO returns to Holy Trinity Church, with Stanley Bolton on violin and Mark Bennett conducting. Haydn’s Symphony no. 92 (‘Oxford’), Beethoven’s Romances in G and F major and Sangbin Yi’s Aotearoa Seasonal Emotion are on the bill. Tickets at the door (no EFTPOS) – adults $20, seniors and students $15, children under 12 free.

Kurosawa Season: Throne of Blood (1957)
Throne of Blood, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, tells the story of a warrior who assassinates his sovereign at the urging of his ambitious wife. Set in a ghostly, fog-enshrouded landscape in feudal Japan, it fuses classic western tragedy with formal elements of traditional Japanese Noh theatre. In Japanese with English subtitles.Tickets here.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay to see Over Seas – Mā te Moana, an exhibition of objects brought home by Royal New Zealand Navy sailors during overseas deployments all around the world.

Kids and Teens Market and Swap Shop
The Devonport Community House invites you to browse the stalls of the kids and teens market, where good-quality second-hand clothing will be available. If you’ve already bought some clothes to the Community House to swap, it’s time to cash in those tokens on new garments for the little ones. Gold coin entry.

Health Seminar for Newcomers
The Asian Network Inc offers a talk in Mandarin and English on the New Zealand health system for newcomers. Topics such as how to access GP services, child health and screening programmes will be covered.

Devonport Museum
The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historical photographs.

Gallery Exhibitions
Also My Hometown: At a new location for the Depot Artspace
Also My Hometown: A 30-year retrospective of artwork is a comprehensive exhibition of the landscape paintings and ceramic works of artist Onlie Ong, who has had a long and varied career. The exhibition is on the ground floor of the former Devonport Borough Council building on Victoria Rd. The Depot is using the building’s upper floor as a creative hub for 16 local artists. Saturday is your last chance to see it.

Takapuna Grammar School Special Education Unit at Satellite2 Gallery
An exhibition of artwork produced by the Takapuna Grammar School Special Education Unit is showing at the gallery for a week only. Many of the works in the non-sale exhibition feature references to well known New Zealand and international artists.
