Gallery Exhibitions   

Also My Hometown: At the Depot’s new location 

Also My Hometown: A 30-year retrospective of artwork is a comprehensive exhibition of the painting and ceramic practice of artist Onlie Ong, who has had a long and varied career. The exhibition will be in the historic Devonport Borough Council building on Victoria Rd. The Depot is using the building’s upper floor as a creative hub for 16 local artists. The exhibition’s formal opening is from 2-4pm this Saturday, and the artist studio spaces upstairs will be open for anyone who is curious about seeing the building come to life again. The Inbetween Place at Satellite2 Gallery 

This exhibition features 48 colourful little felt and fabric fairy houses with varying designs made by students in two Year 11 Takapuna Grammar School textile classes. Last day to see the exhibition is this Sunday.

Auckland Heritage Festival   

Maungauika / North Head Tours 

A walk and talk over Maungauika/North Head’s historic Victorian coastal defences, installed during the Russian war scares of the 1880s. Tour the gun positions and the tunnels. Hear the many stories and secrets that have swirled around for years, from hidden flying boats in secret, sealed tunnels to the belief that an old dump with potentially dangerous ammunition remains undiscovered. Tours take approximately two hours, covered footwear recommended for unsealed paths and steps. Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Bookings 09 445 5186 or info@navymuseum.co.nz. The History of Devonport’s Plaques

Jacquie Morris has made rubbings of the interesting plaques dotted about, including some you may have missed. She then researched and photographed them and they are on display in the library for the duration of the festival. Take a look, learn more about the plaques, then take a walk to find them and impress kids and visitors alike with your new-found knowledge.

General Events

Volcanic Vinyl 

Add some records to your collection at the Volcanic Vinyl sale at Tiny Triumphs this Saturday. A selection of new and second-hand vinyl from a range of genres including funk, soul, punk, blues, rock, electronica, metal, reggae and hip-hop. DJ’s playing until closing.

Raranga Weaving Workshops 

The art of raranga (weaving) connects people physically, spiritually and across generations. Join this intimate seven-class workshop with Aleisha Rou as kaiako (teacher) and learn the artform. $10 a session. Tickets here.

 

Restoring Takarunga Hauraki Community Event 

Join environmental conservation group Restoring Takarunga Hauraki at Northboro Reserve this Sunday for a range of activities including learning how to test water quality, exploring the upper catchment, picking up any rubbish, clearing pest plants, learning about pest trapping, planting and storytelling with light refreshments. 

When: Sunday, 3-5pm.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum 

Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay to see its latest exhibition, Over Seas – Mā te Moana, a collection of objects brought home by Royal New Zealand Navy sailors during overseas deployments all around the world. 

When: Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm.

Devonport Museum

The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historical photographs.

Friday Night Open Mic

Come to Harmony Hall tonight to hear talented local singers and maybe give it a go yourself. Bring a plate and BYO.

Show Me Shorts Film Festival 

A celebration of the best short films from New Zealand and around the world, with award-winning shorts for all ages, world premieres, local films, and a special opening event spotlighting contemporary German short films, called German Focus.
