General Events

NZ Sculpture OnShore 

If you haven’t yet visited Fort Takapuna to experience the impressive selection of sculptures on show in this sprawling exhibition, the weather promised for this weekend offers the perfect opportunity to do so. A path through the wild grass leads to more than 115 works of  huge variety. Visitors can also venture into the underground fort itself to see what local schools have crafted and head to the Officers Mess to take in an indoor gallery. If you can’t make it this weekend, you have until 19 November (closed Monday) to do so. General admission tickets are $25.

Devonport School of Dance showcase

The Devonport School of Dance presents Dancing in Wonderland, a showcase of ballet, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, tap, acrobatics and musical-theatre dance.

When: Saturday, two shows 2pm and 6pm. 

Where: Bruce Mason Centre, The Promenade, Takapuna.  

 

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay for a look into New Zealand’s maritime history. View the wartime artwork of Able Seaman, Owen (Miles) Spence along with the many other informative exhibits. 

When: Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm.
Where: 64 King Edward Pde.

 

Devonport Museum

Devonport Museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history. A great spot to learn more about one of Auckland’s earliest 19th-century European settlements and the place we call home. 

When: 2-4pm, Saturday and Sunday.
Where: 33 Vauxhall Rd.

 

Sport 

North Shore Cricket Club 

Shore will look to fight back on the second day of their two day match against Auckland University, having posted 213 in the first innings and with the visitors well placed on 188/3.

The Patriot

Folk/pop musician Jaz Paterson brings her soulful voice and guitar skills during happy hour tonight.

The Kestrel

Blues man Lee Martin is all about bringing music back to its roots. He plays The Kestrel tonight.

German house and techno DJ The Pusherman will be sure to get you raving when he plays Tiny’s tonight.

Gallery Exhibitions

Māori carving at Whare Toi

Ngahiwi Walker and Natanahira Te Pona this weekend kick off the Depot’s open-studio series, during which a series of artists take over Whare Toi to run workshops and show exhibitions and installations. Walker and Te Pona’s Māori carvings and artworks will be on display throughout the weekend.

When: Friday, 5-7pm. Saturday, 10am-4pm. Sunday, 10am-2pm.

Where: 16 Kerr St (on Takarunga). 

 

The Depot Artspace

Two exhibitions:

Proof of Concept marks the halfway point in a two year journey for the 11 participants in HANDSHAKE 8, a professional development programme for contemporary jewellers. The exhibition is an invitation to see ideas, processes, materials still in development, and to help shape their future form.

When: Opening, Saturday, 2-4pm. Artist talk, Sunday, 1-2.

Creating an Empty Space in Between showcases a combination of folk paintings and Chaekgeori, a historic Korean painting genre, by artist Ji Yeon Jeong, whose works seek to express the ways immigrants can enjoy all cultures in a multicultural society.
