Devonport This Weekend — 1, 2, 3 May
Fabricated… Chris Melville with one of his photographic compositions
Gallery Exhibitions & Art
Material World: Exhibition Opening and Artist Talk at Depot 3 Vic Road
Artist Chris Melville is a visual trickster. His body of photographic works – some of which echo Devonport and the convergence of sea and sky – has been created by capturing images of layers of everyday fabrics. What appear at first glance to be mountains, tidal currents or mist drifting across water are, in fact, studies of material in motion. Read the story in the 24 April Flagstaff.
When: Friday, 6–7.30pm.
Where: 3 Victoria Rd.
Papercut: Exhibition Opening at Satellite2
Max Newton sources discarded books from charity shops and local recycling centres, rescuing them from landfill and giving them new life as collages. He carefully cuts out the images that appeal to him, then reassembles them into colourful compositions. Each piece becomes a new story, emerging from one that already existed. Read the story in the 24 April Flagstaff.
When: Saturday, 12–3pm.
Where: 61A Victoria Rd.
Common Matter: Depot Artspace
Artist Amanda Mackenzie presents a study of the humble egg tray — made for function from waste, endlessly recycled, the epitome of sustainability. Community contributions (of around 3500 egg trays) form the foundation of structures that are stacked, clustered and reconfigured. Read the story in the 10 April Flagstaff.
When: Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm.
Where: 28 Clarence St.
Integration: Depot Lounge
Louise Mair’s exhibition, Integration, explores themes of belonging, transition and acceptance. Each painting is built through a process of layering. Scraping back the paint reveals earlier marks or spaces in time.
When: Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm.
Where: 28 Clarence St.
