Matariki Magic Show
The Shore City Magicians Club’s annual magic show returns to the Rose Centre this Friday with tricks and illusions that are sure to amaze. The line-up offers a mix of local, up and coming and international magical talent. Tickets here.

New Zealand Garden Bird Survey
Help improve the understanding of birdlife on the peninsula by monitoring the birds in your backyard for an hour on any day between 29 June and 7 July. Participating in the nationwide survey can help environmental groups better understand the effectiveness of pest control on the peninsula and give a better overall picture of bird populations. Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
Visit the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay, with its extensive collection of photos, artefacts, medals and more, for a look into New Zealand’s maritime history. Bring the kids along this Matariki weekend to make a whetū (star) in the learning space.

Devonport Museum
The museum has many fascinating displays showing local natural, geological and human history, along with memorabilia relating to schools, transport, early settlers and families, and a collection of historIcal photographs.

Table-topping Shore host Mahurangi in their final match of the round robin before the playoffs.

Takapuna face off against Whangarei Boys High School in rugby and basketball matches this Saturday.

The Vic Theatre
Matariki Celebrations: Short-film screenings
This Friday the Vic celebrates Matariki with the screening of a selection of short films between 10am and 12pm – free of charge. Films include The Stars of Matariki (Marcus Winter), I Love Matariki (Nicky Says), Make a Wish (Nicky Says) and Karanga (Mary-Lyn Chambers).

Matariki Exhibition at the Depot Artspace
Mai i te Moana ki te Whenua is a multi-media exhibition, featuring the work of nine artists, that shares stories of Matariki and Puanga, recognising the many ways that this time of year is celebrated throughout the country. The opening on Saturday will feature a kapa haka performance from Devonport’s community kapa haka group, and refreshments at 2pm followed by an artists panel at 3pm.

Matariki Exhibition at Satellite2 Gallery
An exhibition featuring the work of nine artists, all exploring Matariki and what it means. A piece by well-known weaver Maureen Lander, Star Rise, Star Eyes, will welcome visitors. Read more in the 28 June Flagstaff.

Believe – Rainforest Sentinels
As part of the Auckland Festival of Photography, photojournalist James Whitlow Delano presents a documentary series of black and white photographs depicting indigenous people and the places where they live in various countries he has visited.
