On the waterfront… Greer Twiss with his sculpture at the official opening in April

The donated Flight Support For Albatross artwork installed at Victoria Wharf in April cost ratepayers more than $250,000.

The sculpture by Greer Twiss was unwanted on the other side of the harbour. Several years ago, the idea was hatched to find it a new home in Devonport.

However, the move became complicated as the work needed to be re-engineered.

The Flagstaff sought a full breakdown of the final costs, under the the Official Information Act.These included:

  • Artist fees, artwork fabrication and installation (construction and creation, including engineering costs): $136,051
  • Consenting, lighting and other expenses (lighting to be completed in the coming months): $41,927
  • Consultancy (including engineering peer review): $5370
  • Project management: $53,910 Total cost: $237, 258 (plus GST). The sculpture has had a controversial welcome to Devonport, with some residents loving it, while others have said it is a blot on the waterfront landscape.
