Five years on from the death of a cyclist at the Lake Rd-Montgomery Ave corner in Belmont, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board (DTLB) is seeking information from Auckland Transport on how to improve the safety of the area for cyclists.
Board member George Wood put a motion to ask Auckland Transport to provide a memorandum to the DTLB outlining any findings, recommendations from road-safety reviews, audits, investigations or assessments undertaken following the accident in 2021, as well as any safety improvements implemented, planned or under consideration and how lessons from the incident have been incorporated into these designs.
Cyclist Warrick Jones, 50, died when he was struck by a truck turning left into Montgomery Ave.
Wood also requested Auckland Transport identify any further actions required to improve cyclist safety on Lake Rd and similar arterial routes. The motion, seconded by board member Gavin Busch, was passed unanimously.
“This is a sad story, and the third time we’ve brought this to the board. There’s been no real improvement along Lake Rd,” Busch said. He sugguested “Look For Cyclist” flashing signs could be activated at peak periods.
Board member Terence Harpur also spoke in support. “The whole of Lake Rd is quite a big ask, but this intersection specifically – let’s get the information and make improvements from there.”
