Big storm damages community properties in Devonport

A gap in a weatherboard wall of the heritage Calliope Sea Scouts building on King Edward Pde (pictured, above) appeared to widen last month, possibly due in part to the effect of former Tropical Cyclone Tam.
Building manager Chris Leech said he had fielded a number of calls about the damage, which was part of the overall deterioration of the exterior of the building.
The roof and ramp had been replaced in recent years and the weatherboards were next due for attention. Grants were being sought for the work. In the meantime, the damage would be patched up by a builder.
The North Shore United Football Club grandstand (right) was also damaged in the storm and closed to spectators. Club manager Stephen Millham said council and the local board had been advised “that it requires maintenance or replacing”.
